The Venezuelan non-governmental organization (NGO) Access to Justice asked the questioned National Electoral Council (CNE) on Monday, May 29, to call elections in seven municipalities in Venezuela that do not have a mayor.

The organization explained, in a press release, that two municipalities in the states of Falcón and Guárico were left without their highest elected authorities , because both officials died last February and in April the mayor of a town in Mérida resigned «due to economic problems facing the jurisdiction».
In addition, the NGO recalled that, at the end of January 2022, two mayors were arrested, in Zulia and Anzoátegui, for drug trafficking and fuel smuggling.
«Las aprehensiones de Keyrinth Fernández y Carlos Vidal se produjeron cuando no tenían siquiera tres meses de haber sido elegidos y ambos fueron reemplazados por personas designadas por sus respectivos concejos municipales», se señaló.
Otra detención se registró en marzo pasado, cuando el regidor de Las Tejerías, en Aragua, Pedro Hernández, fue vinculado a nexos con grupos criminales.
El último caso fue el de Ernesto Paraqueima, alcalde de El Tigre, en Anzoátegui, capturado a principios de mayo y acusado de «promoción al odio», luego de unas polémicas declaraciones en las que criticó un mural elaborado por niños con autismo.
